I try never to miss a work out. It has become the one thing I do for myself and I have come to love it. I am very schedule driven and as a result, I try to work out the same time everyday - immediately after I drop the kids off at school. I go to the YMCA and take at least one group class. Cycle, Y-Cross, Body Pump, I try to mix it up. Keeping it a challenge and making it a routine is key.

I go to the gym. If the roads are too bad to go at lunch, I book a room at work with a SmartBoard in it, and play the workouts from my laptop. I also have a treadmill at home just in case, and a variety of DVDs for strength and cardio. And dumbbells. I have everything BUT excuses! Most of the time anyway... :)

In the past week, I have been noticing as I work with my weights I can get a counter-balance spin-off by using my legs in the opposite direction. Let me explain: Because of Post Polio Syndrome, I actually do my weights while on my back in bed. I do this because I'm doing leg exercises and being on my back allows me to use my muscles, but not damage them as I would if I did the same exercises standing. I use the weights in between each set of leg exercises as my neurons in my legs are resetting and recharging.
While this "recharging" is going on, I can still use the legs in a swing motion counter to the force the weights are working. Complicated?...actually not!
But, my exciting find is that I'm strengthening my back muscles, my legs, etc. as I do the weights with my arms. For me this is a biggie!
As a child recovering from Polio at age four, I formed the habit of not letting the polio effects determine the limitations of what I could do with my body. Now at age 72, with Post Polio Syndrome since about age 50, I'm recovering once again from possible limitations. I'm determined to rebuild the use of my body with the same determination I had as a child. It can be done. Any other PPS / Polio survivors out there ?
Cheerio, Elsie

It's important to be accountable to stay on top of things. I have a workout buddy and we hit it at 5:30 a.m, indoors. On weekends, I enjoy the outdoors - walking/running - in the rain! Make it fun and it isn't work!

As the weather gets colder my "workouts" actually increase. My husband and I own and operate a dog sleddding tour business in Steamboat Colorado so Dog Sledding is one of my Winter Activities.
I am much more active in the winter hooking up the dogs and going out on the trail with them every day (in addition to my regular gym workouts). Bring the snow!!!!
I also love to Cross Country Ski on our groumed dog sledding trails as well as downhill ski and snowshow for extra cardio exercise and just as important - FUN!

I do find it more difficult to get up and going in the winter months. The latest oxygen mag suggested Vitamin D so I am going to try that. Most of the time I wake up and it's kinda cold in teh house but I know that about 5 minutes into the warm up I'm warm and feeling good. Also motivation from others keeps me trying.

I have Post Polio Syndrome, so my activity is a little different than most folks.
I do a series of leg exercises while on my back in bed, to reduce stress on my leg muscles, but while working on mobility, flexibility, range of motion etc.
Also, i do weights with my arms..started with 1 lb. weights, then 2 etc. now 5 lb.
I walk on a treadmill, varying amounts of time, depending on my leg muscle neurons that day.
I sit on a balance ball and do rocking and stretching exercises.
When I can I walk out of doors, but use a cane.

I participate in an all year round outdoor Bootcamp. It's held in one of our local parks, and on the rainiest days there is an area that is mostly undercover. This time of year I just wear several layers...although by the end of class, I'm usually down to my base layer! It's just great to be outside in the fresh air after being cooped up in an office all day.

I live in a very snowy area, so I run indoors on my treadmill, bundle up and go outside shovel snow, walk or run in the snow, and clean my horses stalls and carry water buckets to and from the barn! Once you get moving you get warm :)

I'm training for a half marathon and world record attempt, so I'm layering up and running outdoors.

Last night was first run with snow and icy streets and blustery winds slapping my face.

Great sense of accomplishment for a non runner like myself. Looking forward to snowshoeing and winter hiking. Once you get moving, you warm right up.

I roll out of bed and straight into a hot shower. By the time I get out I'm so hot I just want to get outside into some fresh air...I'm raring to go!
