I did not go to the gym until about 8 mos. after I started my weight loss journey. I was lucky because I had my husband to go with and he has been weight lifting for over 30 yrs. He was very supportive and knew I was intimidated by all the people and the machines/weights etc. We worked out together so he could teach me how it all worked. I took me about 4 mos. until I was comfortable enough to work out on my own. Today we still go together but he does his workout and I do mine. I have been doing the same routine for so long that now I am venturing out of my comfort zone (a bit LOL) and he is showing me how to change things up a bit. I'm a creature of habit so this is hard for me but I understand now that there are reasons to change up your routine so that's my new goal. Slowly but surely I will make small changes.

The first time I set foot in a gym I was very scared of all the people and machines together. I did not know what I was doing and felt very insecure with the whole scene. Now, I am less scared but still a bit intimidated by people. I would love to be in the room all by myself doing my own thing. I have been absent from the gym for over a month and a half due to cold weather and my back going out on me, but now the weather is getting warmer and I have the "Stripped Challenge" to under go, my plans are to get back to the gym and continue my three-day a week morning walks with my friend Rose! Life is good and I love warm weather and the good foods that become more available from God's great earth! I posted on Face Book and in my journal "I plan on losing 10 pounds from March 20 to April 20 with God's help!" and with God's help, I will do it! Peace and God's love to you all!! Vicky

The first time I went into a gym was when I started training with my kayaking team in the winter time. There were so many different machines and things to learn. I was 13 or 14 years old. After a while, I got used to the machines and weights and was more comfortable every time I went. I am not paddling competitively anymore and am going to a different gym in town. (I was 16 when I went to the gym I'm going to now) The first time I went into that gym was a bit scary too. I went in by myself, with my plan for weights and went upstairs and did my workout. I have been going to that gym almost everyday for the past 4.5 months and am getting more comfortable with it.

My first time would have been in the early 90's and all I did was go on the stair climber so it really wasn't very scary.
My next time was just over a year ago and at 250lbs it was a horrible but exhilarating experience. Horrible because it was a big kick in the face to see just how weak I was. Not even 1 push up, only 3 crunches. Very bad indeed. That said it was great because I knew that this was where it was going to change for the better.
Tomorrow I am going to a fully equipped gym without my trainer directing me each step of the way. Should be interesting :) Most my training is with free weights so those machines are going to be alien to me!

The first time I ever stepped foot into a gym was about 7 years ago and I was intimidated to say the least. I was heavier than I am now, and the machines looked like aliens to me! I had no idea where to begin. I believe I had a quick assessment from a gym employee to see where to start and she suggested cardio or classes. I stuck with cardio machines for a while, then I did a total-body weight training class. Complete with barbells, and dumbbells, I was HOOKED on weight training from that point on. Thinking back now, I was only able to lift 5-8lb dumbbells for upper body exercises, and 10lbs for lower body exercises like lunges. 7 years later, I can deadlift upwards of 70lbs, press 20lbs and do bicep workouts with 15lbs. Wow, that is awesome...I never really thought about it! I may not be the strongest woman, but I am a stronger ME, for sure!

The first time I set foot in a gym was in the early 80s when I was a high school student. It was actually a typical 80s "aerobics room" attached to an ice rink! I wore a black & white striped cotton leotard. I had played a lot of rep basketball so I thought I was fit....but the next day, after that first aerobics class, I could not move! My first time in a weights room was in the 90s & the gorillas freaked me out a bit, but I stuck to it because by then I was a group fitness leader. I still use the group fitness room more than the weights room as I teach pump & step classes, but I am in the throes of organising my first lot of PT in the weights room.

First time I was super embarresd for several reasons. I was only 17 weighting 175-180 lbs and I went with my sister who was very fit. It took me at least a year to get comfortable. Until one day I told myself that, not one single person in this gym is going to care how I look today, tomorrow or when I go home and look in the mirror. This is for ME and if I dont get out there and over look the fit girls or guys next to me, I would NEVER see a change and feel good about myself. After that adjustemnt and consistency I gained confidence. I still have to remind myself :) I love going to the gym, eventually those people become your friends and they do care. I was wrong, bc they are also there for the same reasons you are. IT does not matter shape or size.
