My high school physics teacher - Mr. D. He turned an incredibly hard (and boring) subject into something relevant to every day life. He constantly encouraged and motivated the entire class to strive for better in everything we do. His lessons extended beyond science class and into everday life - and I'm forever thankful.

I refused to join the volleyball team in the 7th grade because the coach, who was also my science teacher, scared me. Actually, he scared the living daylights out of me. Midway through the year, he took a small group of students, including me, on a fieldtrip. On the drive home, he looked in the rearview mirror, directly at me, and asked why I wasn’t playing volleyball.

“Because you scare me,” I replied matter-of-factly, a big reply for a very introverted gal. And, he said something that I’ve never forgotten:

“Don’t ever let someone keep you from doing what you were born to do.”

I joined the team the following year, shed my shy shell and continued playing for many years thereafter.

Thanks, Mr. Weber!

Mr. Larry Clow - High School Chemistry. Mr. Clow is an incredibly engaging and knowledgeable teacher. He expected hard work, and rewarded students for this. He helped science come alive for me. I will never forget the Friday quizzes with extra credit for naming the country when he played their national anthem, or the 20 page research project that was required, or his example of what entropy means, or learning to sing the periodic table, or so many, many other things. Because of his classes I went on to college and got a BS in Chemistry. He became both a mentor and friend during those college years. I would not be who I am today if it weren’t for the fabulous Mr. Larry Clow.
