Many who follow The Eat-Clean Diet® find family gatherings hard. What’s your advice to fight temptation in that environment?

I have a protein shake with a rice cake and a tablespoon of peanut butter just before I attend a family gathering or any food oriented attendance...it keeps me satisfied and gives me time to browse the food tables...seeing what's available first before settling for something I don't really want or that's not on my food prescription.....very often I bring a dish to ensure I can eat clean.

I started EC in April of 2010 and within a few weeks, lost 11lbs. Now, many months later, I'm starting again. In reflection, my words of advice are: Be nice to yourself, if you fall, get back up again, no one is perfect and its what we eat all week, all month, and all year that will show lasting results! So forgive yourself and quickly get back on track.

Even if I am not requested to bring something I will bring a dessert or something to the table. Often friends and family assume that a pescatarian who eats clean won't have anything tasty to contribute. I have made dips and brought fresh veggies, desserts from the eat clean cookbooks or magazines, or even a main course like lentil stew.

It is always a hit.

Either eat before the gathering so you're less hungry and tempted, or do your best to explain why you are making these changes. Often comments and quips from others come out of fear and ignorance... educating them on the process may shut them up and recruit them as a new clean eater!

My family knows I have never have eaten most things they bring to family gatherings. I've always been a picky eater. I usually eat a ton of the things I like.
over the years the food has gotten healthier and healthier there are still some of the old favs there. But I just stick to eating the healthy food.

My family just thinks I've changed my taste in food.

Our family usually has a potluck style gathering for holidays where everyone is given a certain dish to bring and if you want to bring more you can. I plan to make my dish clean and bring a clean dessert as well and I know when they try it they won't know the difference. My husband is the pickiest eater ever and he still hasn;t caught on that his mashed redskins have no butter or milk, but are half cauliflower, a little garlic, yogurt cheese and chicken broth! I'm so sneaky!!!

I've told my entire family about clean eating and that I am following it for my health. To me, it's the same as having allergies to certain types of food - because the effect the non-clean food has on me is that powerful. My family has (so far) respected that.

I have yet to run into a situation where there is "nothing" to eat because of my eating plan. However, I do always keep a small snack/meal in the car just in case!
