Feeling sluggish? A little spring cleaning is in order! I've created this yummy smoothie to scrub you from the inside out. Don't let the green color scare you off - it's a combination of hemp protein powder and spirulina powder. Spirulina is blue-green algae bursting with protein, essential fatty acids, vitamins B, C, D, E, and minerals. Drink up to clean up!
Ingredients
• 1 tsp / 5 ml Spirulina powder • 1 serving hemp protein powder • 1 Tbsp / 15 ml coarsely ground flaxseed • ¼ cup / 60 ml dry oatmeal • ½ banana • 1/3 cup / 80 ml applesauce • ½ tsp / 2.5 ml vanilla • Handful of ice cubes • 1 kiwi, peeled and sliced (Optional: save 1 or 2 slices for garnish) • 1/3 cup / 80 ml low-fat plain yogurt • ½ cup / 120 ml low-fat milk of your choice • Juice of ½ orange
Preparation
Combine all ingredients in a blender or food processor. Pour in a chilled glass and garnish with kiwi. Serve.

I bought the Spirulina and Hemp Protein Powder at Whole Foods. Didn't have Kiwi so added frozen berries instead. I also used Kefir instead of yogurt and added some water so it was drinkable through a straw. This is delish. The hard thing is that this recipe makes 2 servings and I want to drink it all b/c it's so good. I

Another good place to buy hemp powder and/or spirulina is Vitacost.com. I love Whole Foods but Vitacost is often half the price!
I have also bought ground flax there too!

So I tried this today (although I totally forgot to buy bananas) and thought not adding the banana wouldn't alter the taste that much. Wow.. it was bitter! The Hemp Protein I have says says one serving is 4 tablespoons... is that too much??? I added all the ingredients except the banana and I have to admit, it did not taste good. Does the banana make that big of a difference? Or did I use too much hemp protein?

I tried making it again, this time I actually added the banana and decreased the Hemp Protein from 4 tbspns to two. It did not taste out of this world. It was drinkable but not the amazingly awesome tasting smoothie I was hoping for. Oh well...

This smoothie is awesome! I didn't put in any oatmeal though because I already use Oats and Whey Vanilla protein. I also added spinach for added nutrients. Give it a try!
