This recipe comes from Kitchen Table community member Sara. Here's what she has to say: "I love steel cut oats, but I am always too rushed in the morning to take the time to cook them. Now I just turn on my slow cooker before bed and I wake up every morning to a steaming hot bowl of oatmeal. It's such a great way to start my day. The dried cherries and toasted slivered almonds make it extra special!"
Ingredients
• 2/3 cup / 160 ml steel-cut oats • ¼ cup / 60 ml ground flaxseed • ½ tsp / 2.5 ml cinnamon • ¼ tsp / 1.25 ml sea salt • 1 tsp / 5 ml vanilla • ¼ cup / 60 ml almond butter • 4 cups / 950 ml water • ½ cup / 120 ml unsweetened dried cherries • ½ cup / 120 ml toasted slivered almonds*

This looks awesome! I can't wait to make it this evening. My husband will be so excited to not have to cook before he leaves for work in the morning! (he leaves at 4am)

Do you think I could I use natural peanut butter instead of almond butter?
From: cytosara about 1 year ago
I've used peanut butter too, and it comes out great. Another variation is to omit the almond butter, add a little maple syrup and top with toasted walnuts. Be creative!

was good I only left out the : • 2/3 cup / 160 ml steel-cut oats* • ¼ tsp / 1.25 ml sea salt* • ¼ cup / 60 ml almond butter * means I use regular plain Oats, I don't use salt cause I get Leg cramps no matter how much salt ,I don"t do butter in my Oatmeal But otherwise it was delicious

Great idea using the slow cooker to prepare breakfast! Luckily my toddlers both love oatmeal, so this variation should go over well. I'm going to try mine with dried cranberries. I love almond butter and have never tried it in oats, so I'm looking forward to using that as my healthy fat addition.

This was my first time trying steel cut oats. I'm a Quaker instant kind of girl. I did change it b/c I didn't have some ingredients. I used a splash of maple syrup and cut up apples in the crock pot. I topped it with a sprinkle of brown sugar and walnuts. I was great. Even my 4 year old loved it. Mine looked a runnier than the picture but I also doubled the batch. I may try a little less water next time. Still amazing.

I am really looking forward to trying this recipe. I have the crockpot ready to be turned on tonight when I go to bed. I am new to clean eating so I was wondering, is this a complete meal or do I need to add more protein? Thank you.

Hi all...This looks fabulous....I've tried a few slow cooker steel cut oatmeal recipes and thy have always been overcooked and dry in the morning. Anyone else have this problem and if so how did you fix it. My slow cooker doesn't have a timer but does have a low and high setting and even with the low setting I have this problem. Thanks!

I was just wondering if you need to spray the crook pot down with cooking spray so the oats don't stick?

Would this work with 'nomal' oats? I don't have a slow cooker and just make my oats by pouring boiling water over and letting stand for 10 minutes.
