Age: 58 Height: 5'4" Heaviest Weight: 151 Current Weight: 115

My Journey:

Dear Tosca,

After gaining a lot of weight while attending massage therapy school in 2008, I decided to get back in shape with the goal of competing in a fitness competition. I wanted to inspire women in my age bracket to realize that they could still look wonderful and feel fantastic. With the help of my daughter Audrey, a fitness trainer and avid follower of The Eat-Clean Diet, I accomplished those goals when I competed in the masters division of the bikini class at a fitness competition on April 10th, 2010.

I am now maintaining a comfortable weight of 115 pounds. Several women have told me that I inspired them to start following The Eat-Clean Diet and get in shape. That was the greatest reward of all my training. My present goal is to gain more muscle and tone up all over. I’m 58 and feeling great!

I am interested in becoming a Nursing Home Administrator. I hope to have older women that I work with have as much drive as you do. I am inspired after reading your story and lok forward to seeing more info about you and how your doing. Keep up the amazing work.....
  • From: sarah.murdick@gmail.com about 1 year ago

I'm not quite ready for the nursing home! Hopefully never will be. If more people can live healthier lives in this country perhaps nursing homes will become obsolete. I quite honestly feel better than I did when I was 20 something! That is all due to eating better and working out. Over 40 can be the best time of your life but all too often women in this age group are made to feel like they are "over the hill". It just isn't true.
  • From: lynnronn about 1 year ago

Amazing!!! I can't believe the difference in the photos. How many years did it take to look like that. I am also 58, 150 lbs now. You give me inspiration to start the Eat Clean Diet. How did you get rid of the stomach and arms? Have you had any plastic surgery? I would love to get updates on how you are doing.
  • From: sarah.murdick@gmail.com about 1 year ago

No, plastic surgery! LOL It took about a year from start to finish. If you eat right and work out, you will be amazed at what the real you looks like when you meet your goal!
  • From: jazzyj42 about 1 year ago

OMG! I am sooo disappointed that: 1. The Eat Clean staff actually allowed this to be a SUCCESS story 2. People posting that she looks amazing still have a distorted view of a healthy body No doubt, the before picture reflects a need for weight loss, but come on guys!! The after picture looks anorexic! Shame on everyone who left a positive comment..think I'm bring too harsh? Look at the after pic again!!
  • From: rlainbc about 1 year ago

Thank you jazzyj42, exactly what I was thinking as well.
  • From: SueEllen77 about 1 year ago

I agree that probably putting on 10 lbs. of muscle would fill her out. She said that is her goal! She's working on it from what she said. You know if she's following the "nutrition" plan she is healthier and trying to find balance. I have eaten very clean in the last 6 mo. exercised extensively and not lost a pound, I pray I can drop 20 lbs. on this plan.(I'm 49) I think I will do P90X with it. I am in such good shape I can make it thru the videos but can't drop a pound. I pray I can drop the lbs. as she has AND build more muscle as she is working on.

At the risk of sounding defensive, I would like to point out that my “after” photo was taken very close to my competition date when I was in the process of “leaning up”. I weighed around 105 at competition. If you go to my profile you will see some pictures of me on competition day. Lowering the body fat ratio brings out muscle definition, and although I am not a heavily muscled individual – and being “older” I am constantly fighting the battle against muscle loss as the years pass- you can see from the photos that the lower body fat increased my definition. Also on my profile page you will see photos of me as I look today. Maintaining the low competition body fat is not very healthy and most competitors have a competition weight and an off season weight. The average person would have little reason to lower their body fat to the competition level. Another thing I feel it is necessary to point out is that we all have different body types. For instance, my friend has trouble losing the fat around her middle but has very large breasts. She will probably never lose her breasts no matter how much she slims down, but she does crunch after crunch and still has some belly. I, on the other hand, can drop a couple of pounds and do a few ab workouts and can have a flat stomach in no time. My breasts, however, disappear quite quickly as I shed the pounds. My friend has a large bone structure and I have a small bone structure. For us to compare our figures would be ludicrous. I considered getting breast implants at one time, but decided that was not for me. For some it would be fine. I am happy with my sleeker look. On this website we are going to see all kinds of body types. Respecting our differences is important and supporting each other for our uniqueness is what is going to make for a nurturing community. Even at our fittest, we come in all shapes and sizes.

Jazzy... This is a place where women go for encouragement, inspiration and positive energy so that they, too, can lead healthier lives and reach their fitness goals. There is no room for your negativity on this site. Besides, my Mom spent an entire year dedicating each and every day to creating a healthy, competition-ready body for the first time at age 58. A strong woman like that could never be phased by such comments as yours, which is made clear in her response. Take care and I wish you all the best. :o)

You are an inspiritation to those of us in our 50's and up. Menopause has gotten the best of me, but after reading about Eating Clean and seeign how far you have come I am ready to get healthy and fit. Thanks you so much for sharing your story.
  • From: sarah.murdick@gmail.com about 8 months ago

Thanks! Don't think that just because you are going through menopause that your fit days are over. I am in BETTER shape and lots happier than I was pre-menopause and I'm sure it has everything to do with diet and exercise. Older ladies ROCK!
  • From: skstover about 4 months ago

I am sorry but as a 50-something myself, I do not think this looks good. Too thin is not in...this is an unhealthy body-image at any age. I totally agree with jazzyj42. Sarah, you have a beautiful face, but you are sending a very negative message to those of us trying to eat clean and get fit and healthy. You have almost no muscle mass and I can count your ribs. There are so many health issues that are associated with underweight in older women. I would like to know how tall you are and what your daily diet consists of. And for the sake of clean-eating, post some pictures of a less thin you.
  • From: skstover about 4 months ago

Compare this picture to Julie Van Aker in the Success Stories who is also 5'4" (sorry Sarah, I didn't see your height earlier) and 115 lbs. She has muscle tone and great definiton and does not look anorexic. I just can't support you as a sucess story.
  • From: danica about 4 months ago

Skstover -I don't see any success story posted by you.I would not be so quick to judge...if you took the time to check Sarahs other pictures you would appreciate the effort and achievement she has made. As a 50+ woman myself, I admire Sarah .
  • From: JaimeC about 3 months ago

Skstover, Jazzy, and others with negative posts. I see your initial post (skstover), was not enough so you attempted to prove a point and compare Sarah with Julie. However, you have a problem...Julie appears to look healthier as you put it, but you missed a huge thing that Sarah pointed out...age. Yes, they are both 5'4 and now 115 lbs, but Sarah was 58 in her post and Julie 42. That is a pretty big age gap so obviously muscle and bone loss are more of an issue for Sarah than Julie. Also you should do a bit of research for Sarahs height a her healthy range can be as low as about 112 ish. I understand what you are worried about in regards to self image howeverif she is healthy and happy then there is nothing wrong. Yes, 105 is low for her yet I realize body builders have to do some extremes that are not always great for them, but the 115 should be just fine. Truly the sites you should be visiting and commenting on should be the diet pill sites that ppl post on...I am nt downing them necessarily, however merely pointing out that if you want a place to comment you lack of support you should start there. Great job Sarah and great support for your mom Audrey. I am 27 150 lbs and trying to get back down after having my baby (he is 14 mnts now). I am 5'4 and aiming for 115lb as well. Thanks for your. story.
  • From: sarah.murdick@gmail.com about 3 months ago

Hey, there! I just want to clarify something. The after picture that is posted on my story shows me at about 107 or so....not 115. And, yes, as I said before, that competition weight is not a weight that I chose to maintain. Thanks, all of you who came to my support. The negative remarks do hurt a little, but that is a risk you take when you submit a success story. I am glad I have been able to inspire so many women in my age group. Your positive remarks and support mean a lot.
  • From: brbird about 2 months ago

I am so glad to see your picture and hear your story! I am 49. I've never had a major problem with weight, but I've always had a "tummy" issue. When I got fibromyalgia about 10 years ago, I had to change my diet (eliminating sugar and refined flour/white rice) and step up my exercising (and become more consistent). But now with eating clean and really stepping up exercise (an hour a day--running 4 miles/yoga 3 times a week and short hill run/weight lifting 3 times a week), I have lost even more weight. I clicked on your picture to read your story because of your age and because you looked quite thin. I also look very thin (except, still, my stomach--but that is getting better with my weight workout). I am 5'3.5" and weight 100 pounds. I am NOT trying to lose weight! I am trying to gain healthy weight. But my build is just a very small build -- very small bones and small overall. That's just the way I'm made. I doubt I will post any pictures of me because many will think I'm trying to be too small; plus, I don't want to unintentionally encourage anyone to TRY to be this small. My goal is to gain muscle weight while still getting my stomach down through workouts. Thank you for posting and bearing with comments! I am so glad you did!! Barb
