I want everyone to know that they can be fit and healthy, and enjoy the journey at any age.

Age: 60 Height: 5’0 Heaviest Weight: 170 lb Current Weight: 110 lb

My Journey:

In my 40’s I had a series of injuries and surgeries that left me quite inactive. Eventually my five-foot frame was enormous. I hid behind oversized clothes and avoided cameras, destroying any pictures I could find. I was not happy but was really too sick to do much about it. I stopped weighing myself at 170 lbs.

I was on many medications for multiple health problems. Two years after bouncing throughout the health care system for heart, lung, gastrointestinal and endocrine testing, I was obese. I was told to lose weight and get fit. It was an effort just to walk a block. I could not see how I was going to get healthy.

I believe that every health and fitness success begins with a catalyst. Mine occurred in 2007 when I changed jobs in my organization. It required that I train away from home for 18 weeks. I was the oldest person in the training group. I had nothing in common with my youthful and fit younger classmates, who made me feel older than my age and quite lonely.

My doctor had given me the go-ahead to start getting in shape. I walked for hours. I forced myself to walk to and from class and I spent at least on hour a day on the hotel treadmill. I ate frozen dinners for portion control. I felt better but lost only a few pounds in the 18 weeks. I gained knee tendinitis, Achilles tendinitis, and shoulder tendinitis. I could not figure out how I could work so hard for such little reward.

When I returned home, my husband and I decided to set up a home gym. I felt we needed someone to teach us how to use the equipment. I asked the gym equipment store owner if she knew of any kinesiologists who did personal training. I was put in contact with a trainer, bought the equipment and the rest is history.

At the very first assessment with my trainer, I found that I underestimated my food/calorie/carb intake and overestimated my protein intake and exercise effort. I had placed too much emphasis on cardio and none on weight training. I had blamed my lack of progress on my age. He taught me that age is not a barrier to finding health or a fabulous body. He stressed keeping records to measure my progress. With his expert guidance, I was soon finding changes week after week in my shape, my energy and my health. I set bigger and bigger goals. At one point I asked for a special program for my arms. It was so successful he has marketed it to others!

By the summer of 2008, people who hadn’t seen me in a while would walk right past me in the street. I had to reintroduce myself to people who had known only my formerly obese self.

My trainer introduced me to fitness magazines. Early in my journey, I discovered Oxygen magazine with Robert Kennedy and Tosca Reno. It led me to purchase The Eat-Clean Diet, The Butt Book, The Eat-Clean Diet Workout, and The Eat-Clean Diet Workout Journal. I used the terms “eating clean” and “sisters-in-iron” from Tosca’s books as my mantras. I have been eating clean for so long now that when I have tried some of the my old food choices, I feel so ill that I have no desire to go off the Eat-Clean nutrition plan again. The Eat-Clean Diet is the essential resource manual for me. Recently, I began training on my own due to financial constraints and The Eat-Clean Diet Workout options have been invaluable. Right now I am using the heavy/light routine from the book.

When I had met my ultimate goal, I did not want to stop. I wondered what was next. I found the answer in The Eat-Clean Diet Workout and Oxygen magazine. I was fascinated with the physique of the figure competitors. I spoke to my trainer and asked if I was nuts to even consider entering a competition. He laughed and reminded me of my journey, what I had accomplished, and what I was continuing to achieve. He suggested I find a professional who knew a lot about competition, as it wasn’t his field of expertise.

I am lucky to have found a pro willing to take me under her wing. I am working hard and intend to enter a figure competition by 2010, the year of the Vancouver Winter Olympics. I had a small setback this past summer because of surgery. I lost some muscle and strength, but my preexisting fitness level helped me through my rehab, and I am well on my way back!

Through my journey I gained energy, vitality, stamina, strength, muscle tone, great hair, skin and nails, a better sex drive, improved moods, and self-esteem. I have normal blood pressure, a lower resting heart rate, and my last visit to my doctor was an annual check-up with perfect numbers! Above all, I gained a wealth of knowledge, which I impart to anyone who will listen!

I went from over 170 lbs to 104 lbs. Now I am gaining muscle so my weight is up to about 110 lbs. I lost a lot of inches! The inches that I gain now are from my growing muscles.

I feel so great that it is important to me to influence as many others as I can. I want everyone to know that they can be fit and healthy, and enjoy the journey at any age. My success at making it on stage, whether I win or lose, will do more to promote the visibility of health and fitness at age 60 than anything else I can think of.

Sincerely,
Christine Cmolik

WOW Christine!!! You look wonderful. I never would have guessed that you are 60. It must be a typo! I am 50 and have just begun the Eat Clean diet. I am 5'5" and weigh (gulp) 180. I am SO ashamed of myself. Reading your story really encourages me and makes me realize that it isn't too late and that diet and exercise is what it will take to loose this excess weight once and for all. Thanks so much for your story.

amazing. you look amazing. and you are a fighter! I'm walking alot now but finding pain in my knees. Since you suffered from knee tendenitis how did you manage to do squats?
  • From: Christine C about 2 weeks ago

Hi Jennpleez, Lauren and keepgoing Yes you can do it. I have kept the weight off for three years. I feel great. Endless energy. No typo I will be 62 in July. Losing weight slowly helps the skin keep up :) The key is eating clean, resistance or weight training and moderate cardio. I got rid of all my 'itis' complaints by sorting out the cause including having the right shoes, changing my treadmill and losing weight - knee issues are often biomechanical e.g. from gait problems such as overpronation of your feet. Maybe get a gait analysis or see a physio or start with your doctor. Before I did squats I did some special knee strengthening exercises in addition to the other stuff - search on the Net - or get a certifiied personal trainer with a specialty background like kinesiology or physiotherapy. You should not have to suffer. http://dreambodyatanyage.blogspot.com Christine C

Wow Christine! You are my inspiration. I just turned 29 and have a 10 month old daughter. After my pregnancy, I weigh 171 and 5'1". I just started reading the eat clean diet. I signed up for a gym membership a few months ago and haven't gone regularly. I can't afford a personal trainer and will be doing this on my own. I will be reading your testimonial for encouragement.

Dear Vanmelt You don't have to spend a fortune on a personal trainer - you can join group training, online training or just book one session to learn proper form for weights and one follow up. There are plenty of books and magazines as well. Tosca has a workout book with a lot of different routines - there are all sorts of bodyweight type exercise programs online - many have animations or demos of exercises. Oxygen magazine and other fitness mags give lots of tips and demos I did get a trainer initially because I was having various problems - getting 'itis' injuries and not getting significant changes - it really helped - I was doing way too much cardio and way too little resistance training - but I have made a point of learning all I can about fitness and have done it on my own for a long time now I am not a fan of gyms. There is a high drop out rate for most for good reason - and I see you don't keep up with it - so best to incorporate the activity into your daily life with a little one and all. You can start at home very simply using bodyweight, or bands, a few dumbbells. For cardio - the street with a baby carriage -it will add extra effort :) We are about the same height and my weight was 170 before I started. For you with an active child and your young age - it will be fast and easy - you can do it! Just eat clean, try brief cardio sessions - 17-20- minutes can suffice -try intervals - fast pace then run briefly and repeat about 8 times - 4-5 times per week (and/or take up dance class) try run/walk pushing the baby carriage weather permitting - listen to great ipod tunes for motivation - add progressive resistance training - lean muscle accelerates your metabolism - it requires ++ more calories to maintain than fat. Most of all make your fitness session all about you - time for yourself - learn to love it and you will succeed. Especially as you see the weight drop off and find the you underneath. I wish you the best of luck!

Christine you look awesome! I would have put you in your 40's. I am 44 will be 45 in July. I am 5' 9" and weigh 280. I was thinking that I could never lose the amount of weight I want to lose and not be flabby( loose skin). Thanks for letting me see it is possible. I really needed some inspiration. You rock!

If you are worried about loose skin just be sure to eat - but eat clean - no starvation diet - lose weight slowly and steadily, take good care of your skin - exfoliate (helps to stimulate as well as remove dead skin) moisturize, use sun screen and try a foam roller Foam rollers are very inexpensive - they are often used in physiotherapy for 'myofascial release' and it was noted anecdotally that it also reduces cellulite. It is the one type of exercise you can do while watching tv. You can get them at fitness stores or on the Internet and there are a ton of videos and exercise workouts using foam rollers. Keepgoing - you might want to try just in case you have tight "IT bands" that is contributing to your knee problems. The rollers are great for releasing sore muscles and can give you a good stretch. By the way - I don't own the company :) I don't get anything for you buying them - they are just great and very inexpensive. p.s tena - we are close to same height - you don't sound like you have much to lose - but I know even a bit seems overwhelming at first

I just got the ok from the Doctor/Physical therapist to try weight again for my injured arm. We are starting at 2 lbs ond working up. I just purchased the new Eat Clean diet Recharged and will start working on diet the weekend. I have your picture on the computer to give me motivation. thank you Janice
