Christine Cmolik

I want everyone to know that they can be fit and healthy, and enjoy the journey at any age.

Age: 60 Height: 5’0 Heaviest Weight: 170 lb Current Weight: 110 lb

My Journey:

In my 40’s I had a series of injuries and surgeries that left me quite inactive. Eventually my five-foot frame was enormous. I hid behind oversized clothes and avoided cameras, destroying any pictures I could find. I was not happy but was really too sick to do much about it. I stopped weighing myself at 170 lbs.

I was on many medications for multiple health problems. Two years after bouncing throughout the health care system for heart, lung, gastrointestinal and endocrine testing, I was obese. I was told to lose weight and get fit. It was an effort just to walk a block. I could not see how I was going to get healthy.

I believe that every health and fitness success begins with a catalyst. Mine occurred in 2007 when I changed jobs in my organization. It required that I train away from home for 18 weeks. I was the oldest person in the training group. I had nothing in common with my youthful and fit younger classmates, who made me feel older than my age and quite lonely.

My doctor had given me the go-ahead to start getting in shape. I walked for hours. I forced myself to walk to and from class and I spent at least on hour a day on the hotel treadmill. I ate frozen dinners for portion control. I felt better but lost only a few pounds in the 18 weeks. I gained knee tendinitis, Achilles tendinitis, and shoulder tendinitis. I could not figure out how I could work so hard for such little reward.

When I returned home, my husband and I decided to set up a home gym. I felt we needed someone to teach us how to use the equipment. I asked the gym equipment store owner if she knew of any kinesiologists who did personal training. I was put in contact with a trainer, bought the equipment and the rest is history.

At the very first assessment with my trainer, I found that I underestimated my food/calorie/carb intake and overestimated my protein intake and exercise effort. I had placed too much emphasis on cardio and none on weight training. I had blamed my lack of progress on my age. He taught me that age is not a barrier to finding health or a fabulous body. He stressed keeping records to measure my progress. With his expert guidance, I was soon finding changes week after week in my shape, my energy and my health. I set bigger and bigger goals. At one point I asked for a special program for my arms. It was so successful he has marketed it to others!

By the summer of 2008, people who hadn’t seen me in a while would walk right past me in the street. I had to reintroduce myself to people who had known only my formerly obese self.

My trainer introduced me to fitness magazines. Early in my journey, I discovered Oxygen magazine with Robert Kennedy and Tosca Reno. It led me to purchase The Eat-Clean Diet®, The Eat-Clean Diet Workout, and The Eat-Clean Diet Workout Journal. I used the terms “eating clean” and “sisters-in-iron” from Tosca’s books as my mantras. I have been eating clean for so long now that when I have tried some of the my old food choices, I feel so ill that I have no desire to go off the Eat-Clean nutrition plan again. The Eat-Clean Diet is the essential resource manual for me. Recently, I began training on my own due to financial constraints and The Eat-Clean Diet Workout options have been invaluable. Right now I am using the heavy/light routine from the book.

When I had met my ultimate goal, I did not want to stop. I wondered what was next. I found the answer in The Eat-Clean Diet Workout and Oxygen magazine. I was fascinated with the physique of the figure competitors. I spoke to my trainer and asked if I was nuts to even consider entering a competition. He laughed and reminded me of my journey, what I had accomplished, and what I was continuing to achieve. He suggested I find a professional who knew a lot about competition, as it wasn’t his field of expertise.

I am lucky to have found a pro willing to take me under her wing. I am working hard and intend to enter a figure competition by 2010, the year of the Vancouver Winter Olympics. I had a small setback this past summer because of surgery. I lost some muscle and strength, but my preexisting fitness level helped me through my rehab, and I am well on my way back!

Through my journey I gained energy, vitality, stamina, strength, muscle tone, great hair, skin and nails, a better sex drive, improved moods, and self-esteem. I have normal blood pressure, a lower resting heart rate, and my last visit to my doctor was an annual check-up with perfect numbers! Above all, I gained a wealth of knowledge, which I impart to anyone who will listen!

I went from over 170 lbs to 104 lbs. Now I am gaining muscle so my weight is up to about 110 lbs. I lost a lot of inches! The inches that I gain now are from my growing muscles.

I feel so great that it is important to me to influence as many others as I can. I want everyone to know that they can be fit and healthy, and enjoy the journey at any age. My success at making it on stage, whether I win or lose, will do more to promote the visibility of health and fitness at age 60 than anything else I can think of.

Sincerely,
Christine Cmolik

Your stats mirror my own, plus I'm still just 41, so you're my new hero cuz if you can do it at 60 and look so fab, then so can I! Fantastic!
  • From: Lauren_5904 about 2 years ago

WOW Christine!!! You look wonderful. I never would have guessed that you are 60. It must be a typo! I am 50 and have just begun the Eat Clean diet. I am 5'5" and weigh (gulp) 180. I am SO ashamed of myself. Reading your story really encourages me and makes me realize that it isn't too late and that diet and exercise is what it will take to loose this excess weight once and for all. Thanks so much for your story.
  • From: keepgoing about 2 years ago

amazing. you look amazing. and you are a fighter! I'm walking alot now but finding pain in my knees. Since you suffered from knee tendenitis how did you manage to do squats?
  • From: Christine C about 2 years ago

Hi Jennpleez, Lauren and keepgoing Yes you can do it. I have kept the weight off for three years. I feel great. Endless energy. No typo I will be 62 in July. Losing weight slowly helps the skin keep up :) The key is eating clean, resistance or weight training and moderate cardio. I got rid of all my 'itis' complaints by sorting out the cause including having the right shoes, changing my treadmill and losing weight - knee issues are often biomechanical e.g. from gait problems such as overpronation of your feet. Maybe get a gait analysis or see a physio or start with your doctor. Before I did squats I did some special knee strengthening exercises in addition to the other stuff - search on the Net - or get a certifiied personal trainer with a specialty background like kinesiology or physiotherapy. You should not have to suffer. http://dreambodyatanyage.blogspot.com Christine C

Wow Christine! You are my inspiration. I just turned 29 and have a 10 month old daughter. After my pregnancy, I weigh 171 and 5'1". I just started reading the eat clean diet. I signed up for a gym membership a few months ago and haven't gone regularly. I can't afford a personal trainer and will be doing this on my own. I will be reading your testimonial for encouragement.
  • From: Christine C about 2 years ago

Dear Vanmelt You don't have to spend a fortune on a personal trainer - you can join group training, online training or just book one session to learn proper form for weights and one follow up. There are plenty of books and magazines as well. Tosca has a workout book with a lot of different routines - there are all sorts of bodyweight type exercise programs online - many have animations or demos of exercises. Oxygen magazine and other fitness mags give lots of tips and demos I did get a trainer initially because I was having various problems - getting 'itis' injuries and not getting significant changes - it really helped - I was doing way too much cardio and way too little resistance training - but I have made a point of learning all I can about fitness and have done it on my own for a long time now I am not a fan of gyms. There is a high drop out rate for most for good reason - and I see you don't keep up with it - so best to incorporate the activity into your daily life with a little one and all. You can start at home very simply using bodyweight, or bands, a few dumbbells. For cardio - the street with a baby carriage -it will add extra effort :) We are about the same height and my weight was 170 before I started. For you with an active child and your young age - it will be fast and easy - you can do it! Just eat clean, try brief cardio sessions - 17-20- minutes can suffice -try intervals - fast pace then run briefly and repeat about 8 times - 4-5 times per week (and/or take up dance class) try run/walk pushing the baby carriage weather permitting - listen to great ipod tunes for motivation - add progressive resistance training - lean muscle accelerates your metabolism - it requires ++ more calories to maintain than fat. Most of all make your fitness session all about you - time for yourself - learn to love it and you will succeed. Especially as you see the weight drop off and find the you underneath. I wish you the best of luck!

Christine you look awesome! I would have put you in your 40's. I am 44 will be 45 in July. I am 5' 9" and weigh 280. I was thinking that I could never lose the amount of weight I want to lose and not be flabby( loose skin). Thanks for letting me see it is possible. I really needed some inspiration. You rock!
  • From: tena about 2 years ago

Christine, wow!!! you look amazing. I'm 4'11" at 136 lb, 51. I want to get to your weight. Thanks for the blog. You are inspiring to say the least.
  • From: Christine C about 2 years ago

If you are worried about loose skin just be sure to eat - but eat clean - no starvation diet - lose weight slowly and steadily, take good care of your skin - exfoliate (helps to stimulate as well as remove dead skin) moisturize, use sun screen and try a foam roller Foam rollers are very inexpensive - they are often used in physiotherapy for 'myofascial release' and it was noted anecdotally that it also reduces cellulite. It is the one type of exercise you can do while watching tv. You can get them at fitness stores or on the Internet and there are a ton of videos and exercise workouts using foam rollers. Keepgoing - you might want to try just in case you have tight "IT bands" that is contributing to your knee problems. The rollers are great for releasing sore muscles and can give you a good stretch. By the way - I don't own the company :) I don't get anything for you buying them - they are just great and very inexpensive. p.s tena - we are close to same height - you don't sound like you have much to lose - but I know even a bit seems overwhelming at first

You are an inspiration. I have hit the 65 mark and just embarking on this for a 2nd time. I did it in my 50's but the stress of a sick husband and injury to my arm as put me in such a slump that I have to lose quite a bit. I am your height and have hit the 160 lb mark. I just got the ok from the Doctor/Physical therapist to try weight again for my injured arm. We are starting at 2 lbs ond working up. I just purchased the new Eat Clean diet Recharged and will start working on diet the weekend. I have your picture on the computer to give me motivation. thank you Janice

NO WAY! 60? Wow you look GREAT! Keep up the fantastic work! In my mind I'm thinking: There's hope for me! Thank you!
  • From: steadymarie about 2 years ago

Ok you have just motivated me ..i was searching thru all the photos saying shes only 21 or shes only 30 but I saw yours and said WOW 60 maybe i do have hope..i have Thyroid issues and just had a hesterectomy a year ago. 49 years old, i went to a Doctor that believes in the healthy way he tests my blood and i take the needed vitamins and natural estrogen creams. But every diet and workout regime have left me the same. I once was a fitness coach at curves and always was a great motivater but, after the surgery that was over. I weigh 186 heavier than when 9 months pregnant. My husband says I'm fat and no longer looks at me the way he did. But, i'd like to do it for my health and myself not his insults.
  • From: Debra Woodcock about 2 years ago

Wow! I admire your dedication and hard work! I read your profile based on your age, I am 54 and was truly awe struck by your before and after photos. I have always been physically active and lifted weights. I've had a personal trainer the last 2-1/2 years...BUT...I cannot get rid of the excess belly fat / muffin top! My arms are nice when I flex but I have visible excess body fat. I thought the Eat-Clean Diet was the way to go. I've always eaten healthy and I try to stay away from processed foods but I feel that I'm not eating the right combination of foods or food groups. AND I love to bake! :-( I'm obviously doing something wrong, the body fat doesn't go away! It's frustrating. You're an inspiration for women our age!

I needed to read your post. My stats are fairly similar to yours. I am 5'0, 148 lbs . I have done the yo yo thing my whole life. I too, get very frustrated with not being able to lose. I am very active, did my first triathalon this past weekend. I keep telling myself that the running would be so much easier if I could get rid of at least 20 pounds. I swim 4 - 5 times weekly bike ride and run but my weight remains the same. I purchased the Eat Clean Diet and am going to get going. Thanks for the inspiration. Gail

Hi Christine,, Like one of the other ladies, I scanned through the pictures until I saw someone my age. Like everyone else said, love your success! I'm 60, 5'3" and weigh 164. I want to lose because the doc is talking about putting me on blood pressure meds and I think it is my weight that is causing it. I'll have to read more on resistance training because I always thought it was weight lifting, but you said you do both and they musn't be the same. What do these foam rollers look like? Have you noticed a difference with cellulite on yourself? These sound interesting, when you first said foam rollers I thought about the rollers you set your hair with because I do use them..LOL I scanned the book and it sounds a lot like Mediterranean eating. I have to read it more because I haven't lose a pound yet. It will be a week in 2 more days. BUT..my craving for candy bars and ice cream are GONE!! I walked past the machines at work today and didn't even think about a candy bar or chips.

Thank you for your excellent inspiration!!! I, too, am 56 years old and short. I find looking at the food examples and calories poses a little problem for me. Since I need less calories, it is difficult to figure out the appropriate changes. Was wondering if you could share any of your meal plans? How do you eat everyday? How many meals per day, and calories? It would be soooo helpful. You are my inspiration! Thanks so much.

You look awesome and are such an inspiration! I am 52 and have two young children to keep up with. I really need to check into my priorities. I've lost weight so many times before and am sick and tired of being fat. I'm 5'2 and weight 193 pounds and I don't want to buy anymore XXL/size 16 clothes. When I read your story I thought I can do this and should not let my age get in the way. Thanks for sharing your story and I hope to follow your path.

CHRISTINE THANK YOU! You look great & I am so PROUD of you. I am just going to be turning 40 in February, but I always wanted to know what body type I will be once I reach my weight goal. The fist thing I notice was your weight and height and honestly checking out fitness magazines/ internet you rarely see women 5'0. I once again what to thank you because my height, body type is similar to yours and gives me a clear vision & more realistic of reaching my goal weight. Your picture will definitely will go on my college of goals. Tamara

You are awesome! I hope I can accomplish half of what you did! I am a nurse that walks between 5 -7 miles a day at work, so by the time i get home I am exhausted since I get one 15 minute break and stand 10 hours. Any thoughts or suggestions?

Thank you thank you thank you. Like the others I was looking for a success story that would resonate with me and you are my new hero. I just turned 60 and flip flop from thinking that I'm just starting the best years of my life to feeling like my life is over. In 2008 I had both knees replaced and lost some weight and now I've gained back 30 pounds. I'm 5'0" and weighed 200 the other day. A low point for me mentally. I just put on about 7 or 8 pounds in the last few weeks since my birthday - being an absolute lazy carb pig. I have a trainer but haven't been consistent. I love strength training (more than cardio that's for sure) but I need to get myself up and to the gym. Getting to the gym for a good workout i nthe morning makes the rest of my day great but I have a hard time getting up when it's so dark now. but you have inspired me. Just bought the Recharged book and I'm pumped! BTW How can I find out about the arm program? My arms are big hams. Jackie

I am so blown away by your picture and story. I have been doing weights for 3 years, and it has made some difference. I am 54 and 140 lbs. I would feel so much better if I could take 15 lbs off. My knees suffer when I do cardio, but haven't been able to stick to the clean eating. My biggest fear at this age, was to lose the weight, and have the saggy face look I see so often on women my age who've lost weight. You have NONE of that, you are gorgeous.

Christine...I, too, looked for someone near my age (71) and you were the closest and such an inspiration. My niece gave me the clean diet book for a birthday gift a year ago and I am "somewhat" a clean eater. I am petite (5'2"); 127lbs and that doesn't sound too bad, right?? I used to be a runner until spine/neck surgery sidelined me. Now, the apple shape is setting in and my muffin top is ugly and these menopausal boobs are just floppy! I now know I need to get to the gym and get really "clean" with my eating. I am a vegetarian, so it is hard to find meals that do not get boring. I am going to "google" foam rollers and see what I can find. Thanks for the inspiration to you and the others who responded to your blog.

How long did it take you to lose all your weight? am looking for hope.I am 53 5'2" and menopause is making my life a challenge. I love the eating clean way of eating and plan on staying on it. The weight is coming off slowly, but I feel so much better. Thanks for your help/hope.
