My Journey:

Hi Tosca,

It was so cool hearing you speak and getting to meet you in person at the 2009 Can-Fit Pro tradeshow. You’ve been a big inspiration to me over the past two years and your books, The Eat-Clean Diet® and The Eat-Clean Diet Cookbook, have been a big part of my life change. You asked me to send you my story, so here it is with my before and after photos.

Tosca and Brenda McKinney at CanFit Pro

I wasn’t always fat. In fact, growing up I was thin and fairly active. When I moved out on my own and got a “real job” when I was 21, I sat on my butt all day and started to gain weight. By the time I got married at 25, I had gained 60 pounds and weighed a total of 232 pounds. I was horrified when I saw my wedding pictures and set out to lose the weight.

Over the next five years, I tried every diet pill and program I could get my hands on. I would lose 80 pounds and then gain it back as soon as I stopped following whatever plan I was on. In the end, I spent over $15,000 on gimmicks. With no success and having gained even more weight, I decided I needed to embrace my curves. Clearly I was meant to be heavy, right?

By the time I was 33, I had stopped weighing myself regularly but thought I weighed about 275 pounds. During a visit to the doctor I found out that in fact I weighed much more than that. I couldn’t believe it, so I went to the store and bought my own scale to test it out. I got on the scale when I got home and saw the numbers flashing back at me – 314 pounds. I hopped on and off in hopes that the numbers would change, but they didn’t. I didn’t recognize the morbidly obese person staring back at me in pictures and in the mirror.

My back ached when I woke up, I didn’t sleep well, going up a flight of stairs took all of my energy and breath and I had panic attacks thinking about not being able to fit in a booth at a restaurant or if I would need a seatbelt extender the next time I had to fly.  I was finally ready to change my life for good.

I’m lucky to work at a company that has a great wellness program and a company fitness coordinator. The day after I learned I weighed 314 pounds, I went to her for help. She connected me with a personal trainer named Albert, who I’ve been working with for the last two years. I took me about six months to get into the swing of things, but after a year I had lost 54 pounds!

I was happy with the results but my weight loss stalled after that first year. I took a long hard look at what I was doing. I had been reading Oxygen magazine and your column for a long time, and finally decided to check out your cookbook. I started to read more about Eating Clean and it was like someone hit me over the head! It all started to make sense – I had been eating food that I thought was healthy but it was filled with sugar and chemicals! All of this time I was concerned with calories and fat but never gave much thought to the sugar I was ingesting with my instant breakfasts, granola bars and iced tea!

So, I cleaned up how I ate. I stopped eating processed foods and anything with ingredients I couldn’t pronounce and the weight started to come off again!

Today, I’m about 40 pounds away from my goal weight. I’ve lost 14 inches from my waist and 14 dress sizes. I exercise five times a week, twice a day. When I don’t get to work out I feel tired and crabby. I did my first 5 km run last year and came in last but I didn’t care. This year, I won’t be first but I won’t be last either. I’ve even started to train for a sprint duathlon!

At work, I’ve done presentations on how exercise and The Eat-Clean Diet™ changed my life. People still chase me down the hall and send me emails to tell me how they’ve changed the way they eat because of my presentation! It’s an amazing feeling to know that I, of all people, have the power to inspire others!

Thank you, Tosca!

Brenda

Brenda, what an inspiration you are! Congratulations on the life change and transformation. My weight history is somewhat similar to yours. I was always overweight, though. I was also, 232 when I got married and my heaviest was 263. I now weigh about 162. I did Weight Watchers but have decided to try the Eat Clean approach as I am stuck and would still like to lose a bit more. Thanks for sharing your story!

how did you deal with knowing you had a lot of weight to lose? I feel its overwhelming that i "technically" should weight about 90-100 pounds less than i am (im 5'5" and 232lbs). It seems almost impossible to think that i could lose 100 pounds. how did u mentally deal with it?

Brenda, this is me! I've been searching for someone that I could relate to! Tall, beautiful but over 300 lbs. I am so grateful you posted this. I would love to chat with you on a regular basis to learn the deep dark parts, the day to day stuff, how you endured such a heavy load (no pun here, I promise). I am 306 and 5'10". I am so ready but am finding it so hard to do. I love Tosca Reno's books and want this so bad. But how did you get up, how did you take the first step, how did you get thru the "oh, I will start again tomorrow, tonight I want ice cream, days?" those are what I am struggling with today.

Thanks for all of your feedback everyone! Being able to inspire other people is one of the things that has really motivated me to keep going! Perhaps in the future there will be a follow up to my story, but in the meantime if you check out the May/June issue of Clean Eating Magazine (on sale April 6) you'll find a current photo of me, as I am the featured success story in the magazine. Along with all of Tosca's books the Magazine, which she also writes for has been a fabulous source of ideas and inspiration for me—you should check it out if you haven't already! :o) Brenda

Brenda, you look absolutely amazing!! Well done, you must be so proud to say the least!! The more I read the sucess stories the more inspired I am. It doesn't matter what we weigh at the start but it is important that what ever situation we find ourselves in we take control and do it for ourselves. Your story has been a real encouragement to me and as I said reminds me that if I want to lose my weight I can!! Looking forward to getting Tosca's book next month. Keep up with all you are doing, and hope your next 5k goes well!

Thanks for the comments everyone! This July 26 will be my 3 year anniversary of when i started on my journey to a healthier me, to celebrate...I'm going to do a duathlon (3 k run, 30k bike, 7 k run) something that I never imagined i would want o do or be able to do for that matter! 1 thing I have learned is that it doesn't matter if you have 5 lbs to lose or 105 lbs to lose...you are what you eat! Keep it clean if you want to see real results and feel great...and your success is what inspires others, including me to keep it up!

jesse6884-you have to deal with it one day at a time, or even better yet, one meal at a time. That's what I plan to do. I just ordered the Eat-clean book & recipe book, I can't wait to get started. I have 30 pounds to lose, and I really want to turn my diet and lifestyle around that this becomes an everyday thing for me. I'm tired of stressing over the extra weight, the hormonal flucuations, tiredness, brain fog, I could go on and on. I am 40 years old, I want to be healthy now, every day. I want to create "healthy" habits and shed the bad ones along with the extra weight. I want to live healthy right now, so I plan on staying in the moment and not getting too overwhelmed by thinking of tomorrow or 3 days from now. It's time to make our health a priority. Good luck to you all! WE CAN DO THIS!!!

I love the Eat Clean idea, but it all seems so overwhelming... I am not sure if it is because I am not ready or I just dont know where to to start??? Can you over any help??? Again....great job!!! Thank u Brenda for share your story I just saw it today and it was what I need to hear. It's not alot of big people on the web or mag that tell there stories. It's people who lost 30 maybe 50 to 70 or 100 but not no more then that's not saying that is not wonderful because that great. I have got the book called OFF THE COUCH by Oxygen telling me about Amy Barnes she lost 339lbs and that right there was wonderful it's like a workout bible for me. When I saw that I started excerise myself i went to boot camp for four months and lost 100lbs so far. Then i stop to planned my wedding and to go back to work full time but know I can really get myself back into excersing and Eating Clean for me. I am 6' 2 and I was 476lbs now i am 376 i still have alot to go but i know i can do it because i am not alone out there who need to lose over 200 or 170 more pounds I am going to keep reading oxygen and eat-clean and keep Weight Training and i hope i can be like Amy Barnes and You one Day Thank you Again!!!!!

Brenda, you are truly inspiring. I completely identify with the statement "I didn’t recognize the morbidly obese person staring back at me in pictures and in the mirror." That is me! I was ridiculously skinny as a child, grew up with a few extra pounds because I had a father who forced us to eat when we didn't want to. THEN... would tell us we were too fat! I finally got to a place where I did not let that bother me any longer and was able to tell him when I reach a goal weight of 124 that I didn't do this for him, I did it for me! He did not approve of my 124 pound body... I was too skinny and was no longer his daughter... messed up or what! That was my dad though! I managed to maintain until I got VERY sick and nearly died, and the meds caused me to gain an enormous amount of weight which I have not been able to get off this body. I am looking forward to this journey with the Eat Clean family!

Great job! Can youplease share some advice on how to get started? I have 100 pounds to lose and I am scared to start but I love the sounds of it. I like to know samples of what to eat.

You look amazing! What an inspiring story! Thanks for sharing with us!
  • From: gtskinny about 5 months ago

Thanks for your continued support everyone! Advice to get started would be...baby steps. Don't try to just cut everything bad out of your life all at once, it doesn't work that way. Especially if you have a more than just a few pounds to lose. DON'T focus just on scale weight! Pay attention to how your clothes are fitting less about what the scale says. Your scale weight can fluctuate 5-10lbs in one day from morning to night depending what you've been eating. Last but not least, surrpund yourself with positive, like-minded people! And pay it forward, take what you learn and use it to help other people! :o) Brenda

You really have given me encouragement to change my way of thinking ... I was just like a lot of other people. Fell into the weight loss abyss of information. And there sure is a lot of conflicting advice. It really makes a person take another look at things when you see so many great success stories. You should be very proud of yourself for what you have achieved. Thanks for your motivational words and before and after photos showing your journey.
